 RSM Math Club and MOEMS

Our school's math club meets weekly for one hour. Club members explore a topic or strategy in depth, using the text Creative Problem Solving in School Mathematics (or other sources), or they practice for the contests using non-routine problems.

The highlights for students are the five monthly contests, administered from November to March. No traveling is required. These contests provide an incentive for students to intensify their study of math.

At RSM we have two teams: one for elementary school students (grades 4, 5, 6) and one for middle school students (grades 7 and 8). Every team can have up to 35 members. The team is made up of 12 students that are taking a class sponsored by our school and the rest of the team is made up of the students participating in Math Circle classes.

The members of the sponsored team are selected after 3 rounds of tests. The first round takes place during the regular algebra classes, with a test administered for RSM students recommended by their teachers. The participants in the next two rounds are invited personally based on the scores from the previous round.

About MOEMS: Created in 1977, the Math Olympiads (MOEMS) officially began in 1979. Last year 150,000 students from 6,000 teams worldwide participated in the Olympiads. 49 of the 50 states and approximately 30 other countries were represented. (More at www.moems.org

Math Kangaroo

Math KangarooOn Thursday, March 18th RSM will host The 13th Annual MATH KANGAROO - one of the greatest international math competitions for children in grades 1-12.
Registration deadline: January 20, 2010.

RSM-Newton - 6:00 PM
RSM-San Jose - 4:00 PM
MWSM-Framingham - 4:00 PM

All students are given recognition and gifts for participation. Every year more than 5 000 000 students from over 40 countries participate in the contest. Math Kangaroo is a popular international non-selective competition in mathematics for students in grades 1 through 12.  The competition takes the form of a multiple choice test.  Each participant is seen as a winner and receives recognition and gifts on the test day in March.  Those who achieve the top results are awarded in May.  The atmosphere of appreciation for the students' learning and the fun in each competition room across USA are the reasons why participants return year after year and bring their siblings and friends along.  Math Kangaroo helps the students both to develop their skills and to enjoy mathematics even more.
