Welcome to School of Mathematics in San Jose

RSM San Jose is a branch of popular K-12 after-school mathematics enrichment program. Founded in the Boston area - home to Harvard, MIT and other excellent academic institutions, our school expanded to multiple locations across the country. Our San Jose branch (also serving Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Cupertino and surrounding areas) is following traditions of mathematics teaching gathered in more then 12 years of school existence.

Our children benefit from rigorous mathematical training, we help to excel at algebra, geometry and gain priceless mathematical skills.

Whether your child needs to brush up his/her math or feels not challenged enough in school, we can help. We will provide something that regular mathematics tutor can't - ability to study in naturally challenging and fun class environment. Our children study mathematics, benefit from each other's progress and make friends.

For over 12 years we have been providing world-class mathematics education with an emphasis on problem solving skills and critical thinking. RSM Curriculum includes all requirements for ISEE, SAT-I, SAT-II, ACT and AP, as well as opportunities to prepare for and participate in Mathematics Competitions and Olympiads.

Curriculum Subjects

RSM is the only after-school math program that has a solid continuous K-12 mathematics curriculum. It includes mathematics of several levels of challenge for each grade: Pre-Algebra, Algebra levels 1 and 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Test Preparation for ISEE, SAT-I, SAT-II, ACT and AP. We also prepare our children for Mathematics Competitions and Olympiads. One of the distinguishing elements of program is the early introduction of Algebra (as early as the 1st grade) and Geometry.

Our Approach

Understanding vs Memorization: we foster active learning and discovery, rather than making students drill and practice material that they don't understand.

Early introduction of Algebra and Geometry is proven to remove anxiety about high school mathematics and becomes one of the natural components of the overall cognition development for young students.

Logic and abstract thinking. Beginning at a very young age children are able to use their common sense to make  easy transition from familiar concrete thinking to abstract thinking. The effect is the overall development of better cognition, not just improved mathematics skills.

All topics are logically interconnected. There is no needless repetition of topics. We ask to use previously learned skills in new sets of problems.

Practice makes perfect. We require home work. This is the only reliable way to retain the material learned in class - even if it was well understood at that time.

Our curriculum is developed with active participation of teachers. Every teacher has thorough understanding of our teaching method and has access to curriculum resources. Teaching process is closely monitored by Curriculum Director.

Mathematics Tutoring

For majority of our students we recommend studying mathematics in a classroom environment, however we also provide one-on-one tutoring services. If your child needs help with algebra, geometry or in other areas, we can schedule a private tutoring lesson with one of our teachers. We also recommend individual sessions when your child is falling behind in RSM class or joining the school mid-year.

Preparing for SAT Exams?

Our school gives children a solid mathematics education and an excellent basis for success at SAT exams. See it for yourself and compare mathematics SAT score averages (out of 800) for entire nation, California and our school:

California's Average: 516
Our Student's Average: 774

These results speak for themselves.

Class Schedule

We provide algebra, geometry and general mathematics lessons in a class environment. One-on-one tutoring sessions can be scheduled on individual basis.

Class Tuition

Tuition schedule for our mathematics, algebra and geometry classes can be found here. You will find it to be less expensive then private tutoring but providing comparable and very often superior results.

Our Goal

The goal of RSM is to give children a solid foundation of math knowledge. To do it well we build it gradually and thoroughly - rather than providing a quick fix for problems and gaps.

Every new idea, every block of new information needs time to get absorbed in a child's brain. Every new skill needs to be practiced for sufficient length of time to make it "stick", and it needs to be repeatedly retrieved for new applications.

This is why we offer a whole academic year program, with weekly classes and homework. This seems like a big commitment - but we believe that this is the most effective and the least stressful way for kids to really learn math.
