About RSM-San Fernando Valley:

As a branch of the award-winning Russian School of Mathematics, our mission is to help students build a solid math foundation and develop lifelong critical-thinking skills. Our San Fernando Valley math programs attract families who want to prepare their children for the challenges of higher education and ensure that their kids have strong math backgrounds, highly developed problem-solving skills, and the ability to compete in the global economy.

Today, RSM-San Fernando Valley serves students from many surrounding communities, including San Fernando Valley, Calabasas, Woodland Hills, West Hills, Chatsworth, Northridge, Granada Hills, Reseda, Tarzana, Encino, Van Nuys, Sherman oaks, Valley Village, Studio City, North Hollywood, Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, and Malibu.

About the Principal

Marina Soderstrom, Principal

Marina Soderstrom

Education: B.S. in Chemistry & Education at UCLA, M.A. in Education with Teaching Credentials, PhD in Neuropsychology

Marina’s journey to becoming the principal of the San Fernando Valley RSM began in the city of Penza, Russia, where she discovered her passion for chemistry and mathematics. After she and her family moved to Los Angeles, Marina earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Education, an M.A. in Education with Teaching Credentials, and in continuing a family tradition, a PhD in Neuropsychology. Marina has a California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential as well as a California Single Subject Credential in both Mathematics and Chemistry.

Marina's teaching career began during her time as an undergraduate student at UCLA, and over the next 15 years, she earned a reputation as a teacher who could influence students of diverse backgrounds to realize their highest academic potential.

Marina measures her success in terms of her students' accomplishments. Her students have participated in numerous math and science Olympiads and competitions, such as Math Kangaroo, AMC and ICO, and have been accepted into the world's most prestigious universities, including Harvard, MIT, Caltech, Columbia, USC, UC Berkeley, and of course, UCLA.

In the classroom, Marina establishes an environment where guidance, patience and discipline create a foundation for learning and growth. As the principal of the RSM-San Fernando Valley, Marina continues to draw from her deep knowledge of mathematics, her expertise in education and her teaching talents to achieve an enduring impact in the lives of each of her students.
